Best Sliver Stocks To Own For 2014

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Canadian Pacific Railway (TSX: CP), whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

    Simplicity Bancorp (SMPL)

Simplicity Bancorp (SMPL) in Covina, Calif., started out decades ago as a credit union for employees of the Kaiser Foundation Hospital. The bank’s equity-to-asset ratio is 16, and nonperforming assets are less than 2% of the total, so that’s a solid financial condition to be in.

The success and growth of Strattec are still mostly influenced by the global automotive markets. However, the company's recent diversification efforts into new product lines, industries outside of automotive and countries outside of the U.S. have created multiple new growth drivers that will ensure Strattec's continued robust sales and EPS expansion. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

Nanosphere Inc. (NASDAQ: NSPH) is not exactly a household name in molecular diagnostics, and apparently it needs better name recognition for boosting sales. Its sales were disappointing and the stock was down almost 18% at $2.40, and now we have indications down around $2.35 in Wednesday trading indications.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 medical equipment player that's quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Nanosphere (NSPH), which develops, manufactures and markets an advanced molecular diagnostics platform, the Verigene System, which enables simple, low-cost and highly sensitive genomic and protein testing on a single platform. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 27%.

If you take a look at the chart for Nanosphere, you'll notice that this stock is just starting to spike sharply higher today back above its 50-day moving average of $2 a share. This spike is quickly pushing shares of NSPH within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That breakout will trigger once NSPH manages to take out the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in NSPH if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.17 to $2.20 a share and then once it takes out its gap down day high from August at $2.29 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 652,718 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then NSPH will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from August that stated just above $3 a share. If that gap gets filled with volume, then NSPH could easily tag $3.50 to $4 a share.

Traders can look to buy NSPH off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $1.81 to $1.77 a share. One can also buy NSPH off strength once it clears those resistance levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Best Bank Companies To Invest In Right Now

Which are the largest banks in the world? That depends on what their accounting regimes are.

SNL Financial on Thursday released its first ranking of the 100 biggest banks in the world. No U.S. bank appeared among the five largest.

SNL explained that it had ranked the banks based on the assets they report under their respective accounting regimes. The top four banks, and eight of the top 10, report under International Financial Reporting Standards, accounting standards developed by the International Accounting Standards Board.

U.S. institutions, on the other hand, report under GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles), commonly followed accounting rules and standards for financial reporting.

SNL said that some U.S. banks would rank much higher if their assets were adjusted for the netting of derivatives, which is allowed under GAAP but is not permitted under IFRS.

Japanese banks also report under GAAP principles, though these differ in various ways from the U.S. rules and standards.

    Earnings can't save you
Both inside and out of the Dow, the financial sector is taking a hit following two of the nation's biggest banks' earnings reports this morning. Dow component JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) and rival Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) both reported record earnings this morning, but signaled pressure on revenue generation. The two banks were in the top spots for mortgage origination in the latter part of 2012, and while JPMorgan noted that there seems to be more space to grow in that market, Wells' revenue drop was largely due to fewer new mortgage loans. Wells Fargo's mortgage profits were $2.5 billion in the first quarter, which showed a 9% decrease from the previous quarter and a 3% decrease from first quarter 2012.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

Wells Fargo(WFC) & Co. settled with the Federal Housing Finance Agency for allegedly misleading disclosures on mortgage securities the bank sold to Fannie Mae(FNMA) (FNMA) and Freddie Mac(FMCC) (FMCC), according to people familiar with the matter.

A stunning run last week saw Bank of America and its peers either bumping up against 52-week highs or -- in the case of B of A -- surpassing them. An hour into this trading week, things don't look quite as good, but it's early yet. While Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) , which took a bit of a dip on Friday, seems to be recovering, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) and B of A are dropping. For Bank of America, at least, the decrease in share price is likely a reflection of investor nervousness over the outcome of this case.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tom Aspray]

In addition to the monthly, weekly, and daily charts I also look at the quarterly charts for a view of the longer-term trends. This chart of the S&P 500 and its on-balance volume (OBV) goes back to 1993. Since then, the quarterly OBV has crossed its 21-period WMA a total of five times.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

The high in August 2013 (point 2) just reached the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement resistance from the high at $174.07. This, therefore, was a key level of resistance. As prices declined from the highs, the daily on-balance volume (OBV) began a new downtrend and by October the OBV was acting weaker than prices.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

The monthly chart of SPY, along with its on-balance volume (OBV), paints a much different picture. The monthly OBV moved above its WMA in August of 2012, line 1, and continues to suggest strong accumulation of this ETF.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    The comparative advantage
First, what makes Visa, and its closest competitor MasterCard (NYSE: MA  ) , two genius plays in the payment processing sector is their absolution from doubtful accounts. Visa and MasterCard are payment processing facilitators. Period! Peers Discover Financial Services (NYSE: DFS  ) and American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) serve as both payment processors and lenders, giving them the unique ability to double-dip on profits. However, this also exposes these two companies to doubtful collections for those who don't pay their debts. During the recession, these doubtful accounts crushed the share prices of Discover and American Express. As for Visa and MasterCard, no lending ability means they'll never worry about doubtful account provisions.

Best Integrated Utility Stocks To Invest In Right Now

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- Professional traders running mutual funds and hedge funds don't just look at a stock's price moves; they also track big changes in volume activity. Often when above-average volume moves into an equity, it precedes a large spike in volatility.

Unusual volume can also be a major signal that hedge funds and momentum traders are piling into a stock ahead of a catalyst. Advisors' Opinion:

Competition: Yum certainly has many tough rivals, such as Domino (DPZ), Chipotle (CMG), Chick-fil-A and McDonald (MCD). And competition in the Chinese market has been heating up as well. Discos, a Taiwan-based fried chicken operator, has been getting lots of traction — with more than 2,000 stores in China. There has also been pressure from Papa John’s (PZZA) and Bellagio Caf茅.

  • [By Ayush Singh]

The pizza industry is highly fragmented and intensely competitive. Innovation is the key to survival in this highly competitive market, which means a strong online presence is also important. Domino's Pizza (NYSE: DPZ  ) has established a strong position in the pizza industry on the back of both innovation and technology. This shows in the company's stock price performance, which is up more than 20% in the last one year.

AP It's OK to say that Pizza Hut is full of hot air when it comes to its latest marketing move. It almost certainly won't mind. Yum! Brands' (YUM) iconic Pizza Hut introduced a new crust for its hand-tossed pizzas on Thursday. Instead of stuffing crusts with various types of cheese or even pepperoni as it has done in the past, Pizza Hut is promoting the fact that its new hand-tossed pizzas now feature a more airy texture. Pumping more air into the dough is supposed to give the pies less of a cookie-cutter appearance, an unusual choice among chains that sell themselves on their consistency. Every snowflake is unique, but every chain order is supposed to be uniform across the various locations. It's what customers expect. However, just as the term "hand-tossed" conveys a personal touch, having a few more air pockets in the pizzas should generate some retro charm akin to an indie pizzeria. So Pizza Hut is proud of the "noticeable imperfections" of the new pies. It's not that big of a gamble. The rest of Pizza Hut's menu options will remain the same. If this move doesn't "pan" out, it can be quickly replaced with the next evolutionary step of crust stuffing in the pizza giant's playbook. Pizza Hut doesn't stand still, even if it's odd to find it stuffing its pies with air. Pizza Hut is Bigger Than You Think There are more than 14,000 Pizza Hut locations across 100 different countries, making the chain a major component of the Yum! Brands family that also includes Taco Bell and KFC. It could also use a boost. Comparable-store sales at domestic Pizza Hut locations slipped 1 percent in Yum! Brands' latest quarter. These are competitive times, and for Pizza Hut, the challenge now is about more than beefing up its delivery business to compete with Papa John's (PZZA) and Domino's (DPZ), which seem to always have some ridiculous price promotion going on. (This is a business that has become cutthroat enough that Pizza Hut even feels the need to explicitly offer f

However, there are a few restaurants who have managed to brave the headwinds and have come out as winners. Some of these are Buffalo Wild Wings (BWLD), Sonic (SONC), and Domino's Pizza (DPZ) -- which have bucked the industry trend.

Despite the weakness seen in precious metals a few weeks ago, silver has been relatively stable ever since mid-April, with the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV  ) trading in a dollar-wide range ever since. With the presidents of the Chicago and Philadelphia Federal Reserve banksreleasing conflicting statements, turmoil may be just around the corner. Miners like Pan American (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) and First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) are still facing operating challenges, while silver streaming darling Silver Wheaton (NYSE: SLW  ) struggles as well.

In terms of individual companies, there are several good choices, but these can behave very differently. Pan American Silver (NASDAQ: PAAS  ) , for example, missed revenue expectations and beat earnings expectations in its last earnings release. But despite the beat, EPS shrank considerably from a year earlier on a GAAP basis. The stock has been fairly flat ever since. Conversely, First Majestic (NYSE: AG  ) reported strong revenue growth and a small bump in profits, sending the stock higher since the announcement. First Majestic reported increased cash costs and tightening margins, largely driven by lower silver prices. Each of these companies faces pressure from increasing production costs and environmental concerns.

Jacquelyn Martin/APJPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon NEW YORK -- Federal authorities plan to arrest two former JPMorgan Chase & Co. employees on suspicion that they tried to conceal the size of the investment bank's $6 billion trading loss last year, according to a published report Friday. The New York Times, citing people briefed on the matter, reported that Javier Martin-Artajo and Julien Grout are expected to be arrested in London in coming days. Martin-Artajo oversaw JPMorgan's trading strategy in London, while Grout recorded the value of the soured investments, the newspaper reported. A federal grand jury voted to indict both on criminal fraud charges, according to the report. Federal investigators have concluded that Martin-Artajo directed Grout to falsify records and conceal more than $400 million in losses from their superiors at the bank, the newspaper reported. The charges against Martin-Artajo and Grout hinge on the cooperation of Bruno Iksil, a trader at JPMorgan (JPM) in London who placed the large bets that led to the loss, according to the report. Iksil, dubbed the "London Whale," isn't a target of the Justice Department or the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to a separate report in The Wall Street Journal. The U.S. attorney's office in New York declined to comment late Friday. A call left with the FBI office in New York wasn't immediately returned. The trading loss disclosed in 2012 was an embarrassment for the biggest U.S. bank and raised concerns about risk-taking at Wall Street banks four years after the financial crisis.

It's certainly not as big as Berry Plastics Group Inc. (NYSE:BERY). It's not even as big as Tredegar Corporation (NYSE:TG). Advisors' Opinion:

Weatherford International (NYSE: WFT  ) is going through an identity crisis of sorts that I'm surprised hasn't raised some legal red flags or caused more concern on Wall Street. The company maintains its main operational office in Houston, was formerly legally based in Bermuda, moved to Switzerland in 2009, and now seeks the greener pastures of Ireland to operate at lower costs and further attract top talent. What's going on here? Is Weatherford gaming the system, oris itpossibly hiding something? One thing's for sure, this is perfectly legal but something sure doesn't smell right since tax shelters are increasingly being vilified in political circles here in theUnited States. Ireland has also been under pressure to makeits tax structures harder to abuse by multinational corporations.
