10 Best Sliver Stocks To Invest In 2015

After enjoying banner years in 2013 and 2014, investors need to prepare for market volatility. While investors can't predict economic or market declines, they should examine how well their top holdings could fare in tough times.

Today, let's look at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT  ) ,a widely heldstock that has disappointed investors recently. It may actually make sense in a conservative portfolio.

2014: A year of transition
Last year was tough on Wal-Mart investors. The stock underperformed the S&P by nearly 4%. The primary culprit was weak top-line sales, which were due to lagging foot traffic at U.S.-based Supercenters. There are, however, reasons to believe that brighter days may be ahead.

Wal-Mart CEO Doug McMillon has been very proactive in meeting the threat of e-commerce andsmaller square-footage stores. While online sales still only make up less than 1% of Wal-Mart's sales, online salesgrew 30% in 2013. Wal-Mart rankedfourth among all retailers in global e-commerce sales, according to trade publication Internet Retailer's 2014 list. (Amazon.com was No. 1 on that list.)

Casper1774 Studio/Shutterstock You may not have noticed it, but recently, it's gotten easier to buy a new home. Last year, a strong housing market combined with fears that the Federal Reserve would eventually begin tapering its purchases of mortgage bonds. Together, these factors helped drive up the cost of a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage from about 3.3 percent in January 2013 to nearly 4.6 percent by September. Since then, mortgage rates have backed off those recent highs, bobbling back and forth between 4.5 percent or so, and, recently, 4.2 percent. This has helped to keep housing affordable for those who want to buy a home. But it did pose the bankers a dilemma: How could they get more people to want to buy homes in the first place, so that they could sell more mortgages? Answer: Make it easier to apply for a mortgage. Mortgage Down Payments Live Down to Their Name Last spring, lending data website LendingTree.com (TREE) released a report showing that the average down payment demanded by mortgage bankers to obtain a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage had fallen 9.4 percent since mid-2011. At 16.1 percent, it was nearly 4 full percentage points shy of the old rule of thumb that a home buyer should put 20 percent down on a new home. Six months later, average down payments had fallen to 15.73 percent of the value of a home. Now, LendingTree has put out an updated report showing that after down payment demands inched back up in 2013 (to 16.01 percent), they've begun to fall once more. At last report, mortgage bankers on average want to see a 15.78 percent down payment -- a bit more than what we saw last fall, but still continuing the downward trend in down payments. Why? One clue may be found in recent comments from Freddie Mac vice president and chief economist Frank Nothaft, who's been highlighting declines in existing-home sales, in new-home sales as well, and even in permits taken out to build houses, in a series of reports through April. If home-buying is

For its third quarter, Citi reported net earnings of $3.2 billion or Earnings Per Share (EPS) of $1, which was just below consensus expectations of $1.02 per share. The bank explained its poor performance through lower than expected earnings at the Institutional Clients Group (ICG) division (mainly trading activities in equities, commodities and fixed income) but also lower Consumer Banking revenues on weaker mortgage results. Its extremely relevant to stress that third quarter ICG and mortgage related results came weaker than expected at most banking institutions, including JP Morgan (JPM) and almighty Goldman Sachs (GS). On my opinion, much more relevant metrics (because they can be more directly affected by management's decisions) such as those metrics related to expenses and credit quality came in line with expectations.

In the second half of the year, Crescent established new positions in a few companies that have more such global footprints. We initiated investments in Google (GOOG), as well as the advertising agencies Interpublic (IPG) and WPP (WPP). The fortunes of all three are tied directly to the level of global advertising spend, and they all saw their shares prices decline due to concerns of a recession-related slowdown. At our purchase price, we believe we were buying each at roughly 11-13x our estimated earnings for 2012 should the fears of a macroeconomic slowdown prove correct. This strikes us as a very reasonable multiple to pay for asset-light global businesses that generate strong free cash flow across the business cycle and have the capability to grow earnings greater than GDP in a normal economic environment.

This little biopharma stock is up 3% today, which isn't much, but given the market it's a virtual windfall. One electronics wholesales player that insiders are active in here is Avnet (AVT), which distributes electronic components, enterprise computer and storage products, IT solutions and services, and embedded subsystems in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia/Pacific. Insiders are buying this stock into modest weakness, since shares are down by 4.3% so far in 2014.

Avnet has a market cap of $5.8 billion and an enterprise value of $6.9 billion. This stock trades at a reasonable valuation, with a trailing price-to-earnings of 12 and a forward price-to-earnings of 8.4. Its estimated growth rate for this year is 9.4%, and for next year it's pegged at 8.2%. This is not a cash-rich company, since the total cash position on its balance sheet is $928.97 million and its total debt is $2.08 billion. This stock currently sports a dividend yield of 1.4%.

A director just bought 191,000 shares, or about $7.91 million worth of stock, at $41.43 per share.

From a technical perspective, AVT is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $40.90 to $40.77 a share. Following that bottom, shares of AVT have started to rip higher with strong upside volume flows.

If you're bullish on AVT, then I would look for long-biased trades as long as this stock is trending above that recent low of $40.77 and then once it breaks out above its 200-day at $42.71 and its 50-day at $43.59 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 661,673 shares. If that breakout begins soon, then AVT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $43.95 to $45.24 a share, or $45.53 a share. Any high-volume move above $45.53 will then give AVT a chance to re-fill its! previous! gap-down-day zone from April that started at

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn't reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It's a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

Small cap debt collection ! stocks like Asta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week that before it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small cap debt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

Loan changes life! Is it for Better or for worse?

One of the finance companies these days advertises its loans, where the punch line is, 'jab zindagi badalni ho.' This line is really very powerful. Loan is a good innovation for the purpose of meeting immediate expenses against deferred income. The subject of finance ' be it corporate finance or personal finance ' is about management of cash flows. We have certain expenses to be funded and we earn some income. With money being the medium of exchange, it is possible to manage and smooth out all the gaps in inflows and outflows. We invest the surplus and spend later, or take on debt to spend now and pay later.

Debt can change life. And that's where the tagline of the ad was quite impressive. However, like everything else in life, debt is also a good thing if taken in moderation. If excessive debt is taken, that can also change life ' on the lighter note, the ad's punch line will still remain true.

How much is sufficient? Well, it depends on how much you earn and how much you spend. The debt has to be repaid, and is repaid out of one's future earnings.

One of the main features of capitalism is that earning is becoming difficult by the day whereas spending is becoming easier. Too much competition in all areas is making it difficult for all to earn and increase earnings. It is difficult for individuals and it is difficult for companies.

As companies find it difficult to sell their goods, they make buying convenient and tempting by offering freebies and easy loans. If one succumbs to temptation too often, one would end up piling on too much debt.

This debt has to be repaid in future and that can change life. There have been many cases of people taking on too much debt and then the course of life changes ' one gets stuck in a job one does not like ' one tries to enhance investment returns through by taking on large risks ' one tries to take short cuts in order to enhance earnings, these shortcuts may not be correct for the customer or in the eye of the regulators.

Before taking on debt, it could be a good idea to visit a financial planner and get your ability to service debt checked. The planner will look at your income and expense levels and patterns and work some numbers. This exercise is similar to what a housing finance company does before sanctioning a loan. The same may not be true in case you are taking loans against securities or loan against gold. It is always in your interest to get the check done.

'Badlo Zindagi' ' but ensure it changes for better and not worse. Use loans wisely.

BioDelivery Announces $20M Debt Financing - Analyst Blog

Hot Consumer Companies To Invest In 2016

BioDelivery Sciences International, Inc. (BDSI) recently secured a loan from partner, MidCap Financial, LLC. Through this agreement, BioDelivery Sciences has ensured a debt financing of $20 million in the form of a senior secured loan.

The senior secured loan will mature after 3 years with the interest payable only for the first 6 months. MidCap Financial has also issued a warrant to purchase 357,143 shares of BioDelivery Sciences common stock under the terms of the agreement. The exercise price of these shares is $4.20, which is the 20-day volume-weighted average share price of BioDelivery Sciences' common stock before the loan expires.

The debt financing will significantly strengthen BioDelivery Sciences' cash position. The company has a series of pipeline events lined up, including the New Drug Application (NDA) submission for Bunavail.

Last month BioDelivery Sciences completed a successful pre-NDA meeting with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Bunavail's approval for the maintenance treatment of opioid dependence. The company plans to seek US approval of Bunavail for the above indication in mid-summer this year. BioDelivery Sciences expects Bunavail to generate peak sales of over $250 million.

Moreover, BioDelivery Sciences also expects to complete two phase III studies on BEMA buprenorphine, being developed for the treatment of chronic pain. The company has a license and development agreement with Endo Health Solutions Inc. (ENDP) for BEMA buprenorphine. The completion of the second phase III study on the candidate will trigger milestone payments from Endo Health Solutions.

BioDelivery Sciences presently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). However, pharma stocks such as Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) and Targacept, Inc. (TRGT) currently look better positioned with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Hot Integrated Utility Stocks To Buy For 2016: iShares J.P. Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond ETF (EMB)

iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund (the Fund) is a non-diversified fund. The investment objective of the Fund is to provide investment results that correspond generally to the price and yield performance of a specified benchmark index (the Underlying Index) representing a segment of emerging countries bond markets. The Fund seeks to achieve its objective by investing primarily in fixed-income securities that comprise the Underlying Index. The Fund operates as an index fund and will not be actively managed. The adverse performance of a security in the Funds portfolio will ordinarily not result in the elimination of the security from the Funds portfolio. The Fund is managed by Barclays Global Fund Advisors (BGFA), a subsidiary of iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund (BGI).

The Fund generally will invest at least 90% if its assets in the securities of its Underlying Index. However, the Fund may at times invest up to 20% of its asset s in certain futures, options and swap contracts, cash and cash equivalents, including money market funds advised by BGFA, as well as in high-yield corporate bonds not included in its Underlying Index. iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Fund invests a substantial portion of its assets in the United States-denominated bonds issued by sovereign and quasi-sovereign entities of emerging market countries. The Fund may invest in short-term instruments, including money market instruments, on an ongoing basis to provide liquidity or for other reasons.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Saumya Vaishampayan]

The iShares J.P. Morgan USD Emerging Markets Bond Exchange-Traded Fund (EMB) fell 0.6% to end at $107.55.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Finally, beyond the Dow, the real damage is happeni! ng not in stocks but in other markets, especially bonds. PIMCO Total Return ETF (NYSEMKT: BOND  ) is down 1.3%, proving to investors seeking safety that bond investments are far from a secure place to put your money these days. Emerging-market bond investments are taking even more damage, with iShares JPMorgan USD Emerging Markets Bond (NYSEMKT: EMB  ) plunging 3.5%. When investors try to reduce their risk, the first place they look is in the more aggressive areas where they've put their money. The exodus from emerging markets in both stocks and bonds shows the fear that's rising among U.S. investors -- but that fear is motivated less by the prospects in those countries than by investors' desire to preserve hard-won profits dating back to 2009.

Best Clean Energy Companies To Watch For 2015

The exportation of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, has been a hotly debated topic in the United States recently. Companies from all types of backgrounds have been staking their claims on either side of the argument. One thing is for certain, and that is that in 2015 Cheniere Energy (NYSEMKT: LNG  ) will begin exporting liquefied natural gas from its Department of Energy-approved Sabine Pass facility.

Aside from the potential growth in exports from North America, Australia looks to be the largest contributor to the growth of natural gas finding its way into the international trade market. Transportation of natural gas chilled to temperatures as low as -260 degrees Fahrenheit certainly requires a high degree of skilled execution. That's where Teekay LNG Partners (NYSE: TGP  ) enters the picture. With a fleet much younger than the industry average and a distribution over 6%, it could be a great second-degree play on the coming trend.

If exports are allowed unchecked, will nat-gas prices negatively affect CLNE?
The movement toward alternative energy is gaining momentum. One potential opportunity in this field is Clean Energy Fuels, which focuses its natural gas efforts primarily on trucking and fleets. It's poised to make a big impact on an essential industry. Learn everything you need to know about Clean Energy Fuels in The Motley Fool's premium research report on the company. On the battlefield, you can always tell when the commanding officer is close to beginning a major assault when he starts to move pieces of military hardware around to maximize their effectiveness in light of the battle plan. The same idea applies in the business world - when personnel additions are made, and people are moved around, it's usually the beginning of something big. That's why investors may want to prep themselves for something big from Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM). The company placed a new CEO today after naming a CFO last week, and moved the previous CEO over to the lead role of real estate operations [which was always the plan]. So what? All these changes are an omen that IFLM is finally ready to begin its frontal assault on the likes of amusement park names such as Cedar Fair, L.P. (NYSE:FUN), or even against the venerable The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS). But nobody beats Walt Disney at its own game, you say? We'll see.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

There's a major shift in the kinds of things Americans do to entertain themselves. Just ask the folks at AMC Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:AMCX), SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. (NYSE:SEAS), Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSK), and pretty soon, the Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM). These organizations exist to keep their finger on the pulse of what makes entertainment-seeking consumers want, and it's clear from some of the programming choices and decisions these companies are making - and doing well with - that the companies who deliver the new, edgier product stand to earn the most revenue for doing so.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

When investors and/or consumers think of a theme park company, a name like Six Flags Entertainment Corp. (NYSE:SIX) or the quintessential The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) comes to mind. And well they should. Disney is easily the world's most popular amusement park purveyor, while many thrill-seekers say a Six Flags park is the place to go for the most intense thrill ride experience. Rarely - as in never - does a little independent film company sneak into the conversation regarding the world's top amusement parks. That may be about to change, however, if Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM).

In this article, let's take a look at Xilinx Inc. (XLNX), a $11.04 billion market cap company, which is one of the world's leading suppliers of programmable logic chips and related development system software.

  • [By kcpl]

Altera(ALTR)'s performance has been weak as shares are down almost 9% so far this year as compared to peers such as Xilinx (XLNX) and Lattice Semiconductor.

  • [By Riddhi Kharkia] rd and maintain its streak of impressive performances.

    Beating competition

Altera's performance in the recently reported first quarter was much better than Xilinx. Its revenue grew 12% year-over-year to $461 million, comprehensively ahead of the $438 million consensus target. Earnings, meanwhile, came in at $0.37 per share, while analysts were looking for $0.32.

Altera's outlook was also strong. The company expects revenue in the range of $470 million-$488 million in the ongoing quarter, blowing past the $461 million estimate. In comparison, rival Xilinx's performance left a lot to be desired. The company's earnings missed estimates, and its revenue outlook for the current quarter also lagged expectations, as it saw a drop in orders from a couple of large communication customers.

Hence, Altera seems to be executing better than Xilinx. Going forward, considering Altera's product development efforts, there's a strong chance that it will be able to overtake Xilinx in the programmable logic devices market.

    Fresh products

Altera's new products now account for almost half of its total revenue. The 28-nanometer process has been the primary driver for Altera so far, and the company seems to have successfully taken away some market share from Xilinx in this area. While Xilinx cited delays in LTE deployment as the reason behind its sluggish performance in the previous quarter, Altera was singing a different tune.

In fact, the roll out of LTE by China Mobile (CHL) resulted in 20% sequential growth in Altera's wireless business. In addition, Altera is also counting on the growing adoption of 3G in India and other developing countries to propel its business higher.

The company's focus on making its production processes more efficient has helped it land some solid design wins. Altera has already started sampling its 20-nanometer process with customers, extending its chip portfolio further. However, it is the 14-nanometer Fin

Xilinx shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 29.78% year-to-date.

Best Clean Energy Companies To Watch For 2015: Rentech Inc (RTK)

Rentech, Inc. (Rentech), incorporated in 1981, is a provider of clean energy solutions. The Company owns and operates a nitrogen fertilizer plant in East Dubuque, Illinois, that manufactures and sells natural gas-based nitrogen fertilizer products within the corn-belt region in the United States. It is developing energy projects to produce certified synthetic fuels and electric power from carbon-containing materials, such as biomass, waste and fossil resources. Its technologies can produce synthesis gas (syngas) from biomass and waste materials, and convert syngas from its own or other gasification technologies into complex hydrocarbons (the Rentech Process) that are then upgraded into fuels using refining technology that it licenses. In addition to developing projects using these technologies, it is pursuing the licensing of its technologies to developers of projects that are expected to produce fuels and/or power. In May 2011, it acquired majority interest in ClearFuels Technology Inc. In May 2013, Rentech Inc acquired the entire share capital of Fulghum Fibres Inc. In August 2013, Rentech Inc announced that a subsidiary of the Company closed the sale of approximately 450 acres in Natchez, Mississippi to Adams County, Mississippi.

The Rentech Process is a technology based on Fischer-Tropsch (FT) chemistry, which converts syngas that can be produced from a range of biomass, waste and fossil resources into hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons can be processed and upgraded into synthetic fuels, such as military and commercial jet fuels and low sulfur diesel fuel, as well as waxes and chemicals. Unlike some other alternative transportation fuels, such as ethanol, fuels produced from the Rentech Process can be transported and used in existing infrastructure, including pipelines and engines without blending restrictions. Its technology portfolio also includes the Rentech-SilvaGas biomass gasification technology (the Rentech-SilvaGas Technology), which enables it to offer integrated technologies t! hat can convert biomass and wastes to syngas and into clean fuels and electric power.

The Rentech Process can produce synthetic diesel fuels (RenDiesel1 fuels), which are clean burning having lower emissions of regulated pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and particulate matter, than traditional petroleum-based diesel fuels. The Rentech Process also can produce synthetic jet fuel (RenJet fuel), which when blended with conventional jet fuel meet jet fuel specifications for military jet fuel and commercial Jet A and Jet A-1 fuels. It is developing a proposed project near Natchez, Mississippi (the Natchez Project) designed to produce approximately 30,000 barrels per day of synthetic fuels and chemicals and approximately 120 megawatts of power. It is evaluating alternative configurations for the Natchez site, which would initially be smaller in scale. The alternate configurations may use various feed-stocks alone or in various combinations, and include proportions of waxes and chemicals as products.

The Company owns, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Rentech Energy Midwest Corporation (REMC), a nitrogen fertilizer manufacturing plant that uses natural gas as its feedstock to produce syngas and then nitrogen fertilizer products. The products, the Company can produce include renewable synthetic diesel and jet fuels, naphtha and power from biomass resources; synthetic diesel and jet fuels, naphtha and power from fossil or fossil and biomass resources, and paraffinic waxes, solvents and specialty chemicals.

The Company competes with ExxonMobil, the Royal Dutch/Shell group, Statoil, BP and Sasol.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Robert Rapier] While the MLP space is dominated by the oil and gas sector, in last week’s article we began to explore some of the more exotic master limited partnership offerings. This week we continue our exploration of nontraditional MLPs by looking at the partnerships supplying fertilizer.

Rentech (Nasdaq: RTK) has been around for more than a decade, and it has shifted strategies several times. Full disclosure: Rentech’s Chief Technology Officer Harold Wright is a former manager of mine when we were both at ConocoPhillips, and I have visited Rentech’s facility in Commerce City, Colorado.

For most of Rentech’s existence, the company has sought to commercialize alternative fuels. At one time it had ambitions to build a large coal-to-liquids (CTL) plant, but federal legislation ultimately nudged it instead into the biomass-to-liquids (BTL) space. The company did build a BTL demonstration plant, but ultimately shut it down and has now refocused its efforts on becoming “one of the largest wood processing companies in the world.”

During its interesting journey as a company, Rentech acquired two ammonia nitrogen fertilizer facilities, which turned out to be a profit center that funded the alternative energy research. In November 2011, Rentech spun off this fertilizer business into an MLP called Rentech Nitrogen Partners LP (NYSE: RNF).

In the months leading to the spin-off, RTK’s market capitalization was about $200 million. Rentech maintained 60 percent ownership of RNF, and three months after the spin-off RTK’s market cap had risen to $400 million, while investors had bid RNF up to $1 billion. Interestingly, RTK’s share of RNF was worth more than RTK’s entire market cap, a situation that persists. The market currently values Rentech at $482 million, while the valuation of Rentech Nitrogen Partners makes RTK’s 60 percent stake in RNF worth slightly more than $600 million — another illu

Top 10 Gas Stocks To Watch For 2015

The following video is from this week's installment of The Motley Fool'sWeekly Tech Review, in which Alison Southwick sits down with analysts Eric Bleeker and Lyons George to look at the biggest stories driving the tech sector this week.

In the segment below, Eric and Lyons look atMicrosoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) recent price cut, which moved the starting Surface price from $499 to $349. Microsoft initially priced the Surface in a way that its hardware partners could make competing Windows 8 tablet designs based on Windows RT and still make a profit on them.

However, at $349, the company now risks pricing the tablet low enough that hardware partners such as Asus andHewlett-Packard have little incentive developing Windows RT tablets when a space like ultrabooks, where PCs are selling at much higher prices, affords more profit potential. Is Microsoft's price cut a last gasp to save Windows RT by taking a more aggressive stance in pushing volume shipments of the Surface?
