Top 5 Cheap Stocks To Buy For 2015

Getty Images By One in three Americans could be wasting $2,600 a year at the grocery store, a new survey by recipe kit company HelloFresh found. That's $50 per week thrown away on items that are either tossed out or never used. Married couples are more likely to walk away with unnecessary items in their cart, the survey found. But even most singles do: 12 percent of them said they never overspend, compared to 7 percent of married couples. Although the numbers are striking, Americans still spend a lower percentage of their annual income on food than any other country. A recent Bloomberg Businessweek chart shows the average consumer's food expenses fell from 16.8 percent of annual income in 1984 to 11.2 percent in 2011. Even so, $2,600 isn't something most people can afford to throw away. Here are a few ways to shave down some of your excess spending at the grocery store: 1. Shy away from brand names. The products with the grocery store's own label are often just as good and usually come for a cheaper price. 2. Buy ingredients, rather than prepared products. If you have time to make your own pasta salad at home, you can save money compared to buying the finished product at the store. 3. Purchase produce when it's in season. Apples cost the least during fall harvest season and berries are more of a bargain in the summer than the winter. 4. Don't shop on an empty stomach. You're more likely to overfill your cart in response to your stomach's rumblings. 5. Skip the bottled water. At a dollar per bottle, the costs add up fast, and you can always buy a filter for your tap water, which flows for a tiny fraction of the cost. 6. Make a list. It takes a few minutes of advance preparation, but it will save you from wandering aimlessly down the pasta aisle, debating possibilities for your Sunday night meal. 7. Learn to love bulk. Buying larger boxes of cereals and crackers can typically save you a few cents on per unit cost, and your snacks will stick around your cupboards for longer. Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg/Getty Images Don't let the recent weakness at McDonald's (MCD) lead you to the conclusion that all burger flippers are struggling. It's just not true, and Burger King (BKW) proved that in its latest quarter. McDonald's longtime nemesis posted better than expected profitability during the first three months of the year, fueled by marginally positive comparable-restaurant sales for the period. It may not seem like much of a victory. Burger King's worldwide comps rose 2 percent, with its U.S. and Canada locations clocking in with a meager 0.1 percent increase. However, even that baby step up is better than the 1.7 percent decline at McDonald's. Unlike Ronald McDonald, Burger King isn't clowning around. The Whopper Beats the Big Mac? This would be an opportune time for Burger King to break away from the larger chain that it's been copying for years. We've seen Burger King offer up items that are blatantly similar to McCafe smoothies, Chicken McBites, Big Macs, Egg McMuffins, and even the cult fave McRibs. However, now that McDonald's is in a rut -- having posted three consecutive quarters of negative comparable-restaurant sales in this country -- it appears Burger King is ready to carve its own path. "We started off 2014 strong by generating comparable sales growth across all four regions during the first quarter," Burger King Worldwide CEO Daniel Schwartz explained in the fast food giant's earnings release. "Despite severe winter weather in the U.S. and Canada, our commitment to launching fewer, more impactful products and simplifying in-restaurant operations helped drive improved performance." If there's one thing in that statement that should stand out as a sharp contrast to the current strategy at McDonald's it's that Burger King is rolling out "fewer" products as it is "simplifying" operations. That's an entirely different strategy than the one being used by McDonald's, which seems to involve rolling out a lot of new menu ite

To be fair, your typical McDonald's or Yum! Brands believes they're kid-friendly, in the sense that a kid can get a variety of burgers, fried chicken, Mexican food, or pizza. And, the box most kid-meals come in are covered with puzzles and games that could technically qualify as "entertainment." Some McDonald's and Wendys Co. (NASDAQ:WEN) restaurants even have a jungle-gym to climb on. That's not the choice and entertainment parents are talking about, however, particularly on the menu front, but also on the entertainment front.

The big chains of the $200 billion fast food industry were well represented, with workers from McDonald's (MCD, Fortune 500), Taco Bell (YUM, Fortune 500), Chipotle (CMG), KFC, Wendy's (WEN), Burger King (BKW) and Domino's Pizza.

This past week, in contrast, IBM lost 3.74%. That's still a large decline, but it represents only about 57 points of the Dow's 270-point loss. This time around, AT&T (NYSE: T  ) was the index's largest decliner, losing 4.47% this past week, but the stock represents only about 1.4% of the Dow, so it didn't play a major role in tanking the index. The next largest decliner, at 4.13%, was Travelers (NYSE: TRV  ) -- which, besides AT&T, was the only other component to lose more than 4% of its value. But, while Travelers' weight is substantially larger than AT&T, it still makes up only 4.1% of the index, ranking it as the 10th heaviest component.

I always find it very interesting to see what long-term investors are selling in a given quarter. Kahn Brothers lightened up on many financials that have shot up and now trade above book value. The firm sold out of Flushing Financial (FFIC), TCF Financial (TCB) and Dime Community Bank (DCOM). Khan apparently shares my views on the large-cap drug stocks, easing up on both Pfizer (PFE) and Bristol Meyers (BMY) over the summer. Khan Brothers also sold the last of the Travelers shares (TRV) it has owned since 2008 at more than twice the purchase price.

Though GE Capital has been a huge source of revenue for the parent company, its earnings aren always seen in the light of income from industrial activities leading to how it has been cheaply perceived among its peers. For example, among GE peers in the industrial sector like Honeywell International (HON), United Technologies (UTX), Illinois Tool Works (ITW) and Emerson Electric (EMR), only Illinois Tool Works is cheaper than GE, but it is miles apart in growth potential when compared with GE. So, GE stock trades at a huge discount relative to all of its industrial peers except ITW which is rather odd all because of GE Capital. Though GE Capital has been contributing about 30% of GE earnings and, hence, a good percentage of its earnings per share (EPS), shedding GE Capital is the only way to make the industrial segments of GE to strive for better growth in the near future to make up for the original earnings growth of GE facilitated by GE Capital.
